The 2021 CHSAA Spring League

Throughout the pandemic, Basketball in New York City has suffered.  Many officials were understandably concerned with the spread of the Covid-19 and athletics.  The one shining light of the city was the NYC Catholic League, also known as the CHSAA.  They were able not only to bring Basketball back but were also able to pull off an entire Spring league without compromising any of the student’s wellbeing or health.  All the games were played at one location, Archbishop Stepinac HS, games were being streamed by Local Live and all game stats collected by Ballstar.

This year’s field consisted of teams from all over New York City.   They were broken up into four divisions, the Kevin Pigott Division, Ray Nash Division, Tom Murray Division, and the Rich Tricario Division.  Each division consisted of five teams and each team played at least 5 games each during the shortened Spring league.

There was a lot of talent out there this year.   All of the teams competed at a high level but two teams would rise to be crowned champions.  The first championship game was between Staten Island schools Msgr. Farrell and St. Joseph’s.  Both teams came out shooting well but it was evident that there wasn’t going to be an answer for Patrick Gardner of Msgr. Farrell.  The Senior guard earned MVP honors and Monsignor Farrell broke open a close game with a 15-0, first-half run to defeat St. Joseph by-the-Sea 50-42 in the CHSAA Spring Tournament A division championship game at Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains on Thursday.  He ended up with 22 points and 6 rebounds in the win.

In the second Championship game of the evening, Cardinal Hayes (BX) faced off with Xaverian (BK) for a claim to a City Championship.  Hayes pulled off the victory 70-66 in a tightly contested matchup.  The double threat of Xaverian’s Nick Folk and Shawn Fulcher did not disappoint, scoring 24 and 22 points, respectively.  Hayes had a few players who came to win.  6’8 Junior Forward Tarique Foster couldn’t be stopped.  He poured in 25 points and nabbed 4 boards, while teammates Tobe Awaka and DJ Victory did their parts.  Awaka dropped a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards while DJ Victory contributed 12 points and 7 assists.  Both Foster and Awaka have received offers from Bryant University, and we look forward to the flood gates opening and more offers flooding in.

We want to thank the CHSAA for all of their hard work in executing this Spring League, Archbishop Stepinac for hosting the league, Local Live and Ballstar for streaming, and providing all of the Live Stats for the Spring League.  You guys made it look easy when it clearly was one of the toughest seasons in Catholic League history to execute.
