The physical education instructor James Naismith is credited as the creator of basketball. Naismith was raised in Canada and studied at McGill University. While in Canada, Naismith was involved in religious activities. Its first known autograph dated 19 October 1885 in Montreal, Canada is a small hardcover book, entitled "The Constitution and procedure of the Presbyterian Church in Canada." This book has been sold at Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas, Texas, April 23, 2009 for $ 1015.75 (including buyers premium).

Naismith left Canada and joined the faculty of the Young Men's Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. In addition to physical education, Naismith also taught biblical studies and psychology. In November 1891, Naismith was teaching at a gym and was given the task of developing an indoor sport news that does not have the monotony of regular exercise gym.
